What this site is
Door trim looks simple until you stand in the molding aisle. Profiles have numbers instead of names, widths and thicknesses vary by maker, and the install guides skip the measurements that matter. We built this site as the reference we wanted: section drawings of the common profiles, the sizes that matter, a calculator for how much to buy, and plain steps for the jobs people actually do.
How we choose
We have not tested these products ourselves. Nothing on this site claims hands-on testing, lab results or scores of our own. Instead:
- Style conventions come from design and carpentry references such as This Old House, Metrie and Fine Homebuilding.
- Sizes come from maker and supplier listings. Profile sizes are typical stock sizes from listings such as Amerhart and Westlake Royal. Makers vary, and we say so.
- Costs come from cost surveys such as Fixr and HomeAdvisor, with their dates.
- Maker claims are labeled as claims. When a maker says a molding is moisture resistant, we say the maker says so.
- We recommend types, then show current listings. Shop buttons are searches for the right kind of molding, not a single product we vouch for.
- No scores, no star ratings, no prices from retailers. Retail prices change daily and we have no test data to score with.
- Drawings are illustrations. Our section drawings show the general shape of each profile. Real profiles differ by maker and catalog number.
How the site earns
Some links go to Amazon with our affiliate tag. If you buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides what we recommend. Details are on the affiliate disclosure page.
Safety
Trim work means saws, nail guns and dust. MDF dust is fine and calls for a respirator. Follow your tool manuals, wear eye protection, and never modify a structural header without a pro.
Corrections
Product lines and listings change. We review pages regularly and each page shows when it was last reviewed.
Who we are
Door Molding is operated by WellTracked, a small publisher of independent guides. We are not affiliated with any molding brand, manufacturer or retailer.
